Stinger Transitions

Import an animated stinger with a transparent background and use it as a custom transition between shots.

Updated · Wirecast team, Telestream

A stinger transition in Wirecast is a custom animated transition, usually a short clip with an alpha-channel transparent background, that plays over the switch from one shot to the next. You import stinger files in the Stinger Transition Manager, pick one from a Transition Controls button, and run it with the Go button.

How to import a stinger transition in Wirecast

  1. Select Switch > Manage Stinger Transitions. Wirecast opens the Stinger Transition Manager.
  2. Click the plus (+) button, browse to your stinger file and select it.
  3. Wirecast adds the stinger to the list of transitions on the Transition Controls button. Click Close.

Stingers are usually built in Adobe After Effects, Apple Motion or Telestream ScreenFlow, with a transparent background so your shots show through.

How do I run a stinger transition live?

  1. Click and drag down on a Transition Controls button to open the transition menu.
  2. Select your stinger transition.
  3. To set where the picture changes from shot A to shot B, slide the scrubber to that point in the stinger and click the A/B button.
  4. Put your next shot in the Preview Area and click Go.

How to delete a stinger, and why stingers go missing

  • To delete a stinger, select Switch > Manage Stinger Transitions, select the stinger, click the minus (-) button, then click Close.
  • Wirecast saves stingers in its preferences with the path to each media file, so you can reuse them in other Wirecast documents.
  • If Wirecast can’t find a stinger’s media file, it removes the stinger from the transition list and shows the file name in red in the Stinger Transition Manager. Move the file back or import it again.

Tips

  • Set the A/B point where your graphic covers the whole frame, so viewers don’t see the cut.
  • Wirecast shows up to three Transition Controls buttons. Set how many in Preferences > General, and keep your stinger on its own button.
  • On Mac, Command+1 and Command+2 select the first two transition buttons.
