ISO Recording

Set up and start ISO recordings of individual sources or shots in Wirecast Pro, including Rendezvous guests.

Updated · Wirecast team, Telestream

ISO recording in Wirecast saves a clean, separate file of a source or shot while you stream, even when it is not live. You set it up in the Replay+ISO menu, choose Capture Source ISO or Shot ISO, then click ISO-REC. ISO recording is a Wirecast Pro feature. See ISO Recording for an overview.

Capture Source ISO or Shot ISO: which should I use?

  • Capture Source ISO records one device, such as a camera on a capture card, a webcam or a microphone. It can include that source’s own audio, but it can’t combine separate audio and video sources into one file.
  • Shot ISO records any shot on the Main Shot Display. Use it to combine a camera with a separate mic, or to record sources Capture Source ISO doesn’t list: Rendezvous guests, Wirecast Go, NDI, web streams, IP cameras and Elgato sources. Shot ISO files use your canvas resolution and frame rate, and audio is stereo, 32-bit float, 48 kHz.

How to set up ISO recording in Wirecast

  1. Select Replay+ISO > Configure.
  2. Click Add ISO.
  3. Choose Capture Source ISO or Shot ISO, then select the source or shot. Check the video and audio tracks you want. For an audio-only file, record an audio source or a shot that contains only audio.
  4. Pick a format: QuickTime: ProRes Video + Uncompressed Audio (best for editing) or QuickTime: x264 Video + Uncompressed Audio (much smaller files; default 10 Mbps).
  5. Set the filename and folder. Wirecast numbers new configurations ISO 1, ISO 2 and so on.
  6. Choose Single File (up to 12 hours) or New File Every to split long recordings.
  7. Optional: check Replay to use the recording for instant replay.

How to start and stop ISO recording

Click ISO-REC at the top of the default layout to start all configured ISO recordings. Or open the Replay+ISO menu and choose Start All or a single ISO. When everything is running, the menu item changes to Stop All.

Troubleshooting ISO recording

  • Watch for warning icons in the ISO dialog. Hover over one to see the problem, such as a missing folder, a duplicate file name, or not enough disk space.
  • If you see “Av recording failed to start,” check the user log, then click Edit to fix the configuration. Errors that happen after recording starts appear only in the Notifications window.
  • Record to an SSD or fast RAID. If the total data rate is more than your disk can write, Wirecast may drop frames.
  • Animated graphics and media files in a Shot ISO record as a still image. Put them in a different shot on another layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Rendezvous guests don’t appear as Capture Source ISO sources, so add the guest to a shot and record it with Shot ISO.

ISO files are QuickTime movies with uncompressed audio and either ProRes or x264 video. ProRes is better for editing, and x264 makes much smaller files.

It depends on your hardware, resolution and frame rate. The User Guide recommends at least an i7 processor, a high-end dedicated graphics card and an SSD, and keeping the total data rate within your disk write speed.
